RECURSION: Level Editor is in the works :D

Posted by FoxGames01 - February 17th, 2024

Hi! I post this news because I'm pleased to announce that I'm working on a level editor for my game: "RECURSION".

This will be the final update of the game and l truly think this feature has a lot of potential, therefore I'll try my best to do the most marketing I can, so a lot of people creates their own levels!

These are some of the features the level editor will have:

  • The editor will be very simple and intuitive to use; this is the main philosophy of the level editor as I want many people as possible to create their own levels. Basically, instead of creating a super-complex editor like Geometry Dash where only a few experienced people can create levels, I want to create a level editor more like Super Mario Maker but more focused on sharing little levels with your friends for fun.

  • Ability to share levels very easily through PNGs: In my opinion this is one of the best features, as you don't need to share a strange file extension or some large number - If you want your friend to play your level, just send them the image, and the only thing your friend has to do in order to play your level, is download/copy the image, and import it into the game, is that simple! And the best is that because how it works internally, you can actually see how the level looks before playing it.

  • The Recursion Level Editor is not only a level editor where you can create levels based on difficulty or mechanics, but also a level editor where you can express yourself artistically. Here is an example of a random Sans pixelart I made along with other 'things?', but basically you can create any pixelart you want. (The only limitation is the grid size and the colors)

  • Everything will be completely free, of course :)

Possible backsides:

  • No custom songs, or very few default songs to choose and that can get annoying. I thought of an option of adding a Midi file, and then all the notes and instruments get stored in the PNG file of the level, ngl seems very cool and fun, but also seems a lot of extra work that might be unnecesary.
  • Bugs, like for example that the PNG is compressed so much that some data of the level dissapears or things like that.

End of the post! If you did read everything to the end thanks a lot :)

I'm planning to release this in 1-2.5 months.

this looks cool!
for custom songs, maybe you could use newgrounds song ids? then you would only need to store a few numbers in the png :)

Hi, I thought about this, but I don't think there is a way to use the Newgrounds API to download songs by ID unless you have some sort of special permission to do it like Geometry Dash, but I will look into it if it's possible :)

@FoxGames01 i've implemented it before! i don't know what API geometry dash uses, what i do is getting the URL for an mp3 from a song's page and from there downloading it into the game's save directory
not sure if that works well outside of godot though

oh, i could do that, although its probably against newground TOS. Maybe one thing that I could do is to save a link in the PNG that redirects to a mp3 file, so you can basically put any song you want in the level.
This option seems the best, but it also can be a bit confusing for players that are not too much into computers, or that they don't know how links work in general.
Hmmmmm, maybe I will stay with default songs for now, and if the game gets enough popularity I add custom songs. thanks :)
